Welcome to Year 2

Castles - knights and tiaras

This term our topic is 'Castles - knights and tiaras'. The class will be learning all about how different types of castles through history from simple mud and wooden forts to the castles  that we all recognise. They will then study the everyday life of people from the medieval period and visit Warwick Castle to see it for themselves.

Marvellous Maths!

This half-term, our focus will be on addition and subtraction. The children will learn mental strategies using their existing knowledge of number bonds to ten. Next they will learn how to use column method to add and subtract.

Their final unit of work before the end of the term will be shape. They will name and describe 2-D and 3-D shapes using mathematical vocabulary such as vertices.

  • 1-minute maths This FREE app is fantastic to develop children's fluency. It follows the 'White Rose' scheme which we use in school and will complement learning perfectly!
  • TT Rockstars Remember to practise your 2,5 and 10 times tables using your TT Rockstars username and password.
  • Nrich challenges If your child needs an extra stretch, try some of these problems aimed at Year 2 children.
  • Topmarks maths games There are lots of maths games here, arranged by topic. Have a go at some of them!

Exciting English!

Jigsaw - 'Celebrating differences'

This half-term we will be learning about how we are similar and different. Our discussions will look at challenging stereotypes that we all often hear. Finally, we'll think about our own uniqueness and what makes us who we are.

  • Health for Kids This is a wonderful website that is useful for both your child, and for you as a parent. It has games and information about feelings, health, illnesses and sections on body image, mental health and much more. There is also a section for you, the parent, to refer to for information on the school nurse and it shows local Solihull support services.
