Science Week 2024
This year our theme for Science Week was time. Throughout the week we completed lots of activities linked to the future of change. Key Stage Two began the week with a house swap and they completed a range of exciting science experiments.
Reception
In Reception pupils thought about what a scientist looks like. They created their own sketches to share their ideas.
Year 1
Year 1 made rainbows in a dark tent. They also made windmills and tested them out. They created tornados in a bottle, which the children thought was amazing!
Year 2
Year 2 measured the temperature of the weather using thermometers. They recorded in degrees Celsius and drew images to show the type of weather at the time of measurement. They also watched a video all about Ice Cores and how we are able to look at how hot and cold the Earth has been in the past.
Year 4
During Science Week, Year 4 discussed mould and how harmful it can be. They designed posters to inform others about the dangers and how to prevent mould and remove it if it is found. They are all now on display in the Year 4 classroom.
Year 5
Pupils in Year 5 completed an adaptation based activity. They created their own butterflies and were challenged to hide them in the classroom. Mrs Boyce (acting as a predator) was then given the impossible task of identifying all 30 butterflies. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed discovering more about adaptation and the process of evolution.
Year 5 also created future farming projects. They worked with a partner to research and then present their ideas to the class. They had lots of fun finding out about growing plants in space and genetic modification.
Year 6
Year 6 chose two of the Science Week projects on offer. The first was the 'farming of the future' project where children researched new farming methods and designed a 'farm of the future'. The second was a project where children needed to communicate to the public how to protect themselves, and their homes, from the effects of mould.
We also loved having a go at a science quiz sent in by secondary school students taught by Leo's Mum! It was so tricky but we came across some amazing scientific concepts and vocabulary which we had never heard of before! Harsukh was class champion - well done Harsukh!
